“A quick individual shout-out to the musicians – John Hilsen and Joni Griffith.  The original music that accompanies the action, most especially the way Griffith uses her voice to accent moments, is alternately hilarious and moving.  Tamburlaine wouldn’t be as effective a production without them.”

Equally at home on the violin as with her voice, Joni enjoys performing as a theatrical vocalist, composer, voice over artist, and gigging musician. She sings, plays violin and musical saw with local ensembles, as well as with touring bands and musicians.

She is the vocalist and creator of Minneapolis-based jazz trio Joni Jane and the Midnight Sugar, with Willow Waters on guitar, and Drew Kellum on bass.

As a composer, Joni has written original music for Combustible Company’s 2021 production of A Midsummer Nights Dream, and composed original music for their 2022 productions of Monster Heart and The Tempest.

“Griffith composed the evocative musical settings and vocal arrangements for a number of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poems that offer commentary on the unspooling narrative, adding immeasurably to the moodiness of the piece.”

– Talkin’ Broadway Review of Monster Heart

She previously collaborated for years with Minneapolis electric folk band Bella Yaga – helping to create dreamy vocal and violin harmonies in addition to several large scale performance pieces with the group. She is also a frequent collaborator with Carlisle Evans Peck (formerly Carlisle Evans Peck and the Lady’s Slippers).

Featured below: the music video for Bella Yaga’s track “Beheaded”featuring Joni on low vocal harmonies, violin, and saw. Anna Johnson on lead vocals and guitar, and Alia Jeraj on high vocal harmonies.

She is constantly exploring and learning new musical techniques and genres, including recording dreamy indie pop music in her bedroom, but she specializes in classical voice and classic (golden age) musical theatre.
